Ishihara eyes power plant in sea to counter China's activities
japantoday.com Tuesday, February 1, 2005 at 16:06 JST
TOKYO — The government said Tuesday it is considering ways to utilize Okinotori Island separately from Tokyo Gov Shintaro Ishihara, who plans to build an electric power plant in waters around the island apparently to counter China's marine research activities.
In making its policy on Japan's southernmost island, located some 1,740 kilometers from Tokyo but administratively part of the capital[...more...
<--- Okinotori
Japan claims an exclusive economic zone over this fragment of coral reef known as Okinotori Island, far to the southeast of Okinawa. The 1982 U.N. Law of the Sea Convention states quite clearly: "Rocks which cannot sustain human habitation or economic life of their own shall have no exclusive economic zone or continental shelf." Okinotori "island"is no more than a meter or so wide and high. |

Ishihara and Okinotorishima
The February 3 issue of the weekly Shukan Shincho has an exclusive interview with Gov. Ishihara by journalist Yoshiko Sakurai. On the Okinotorishima, Ishihara says:
"Tokyo is going to be engaged in economic activity on the island, no matter what the government says. My son (a member of the National Diet) persuaded the National Land Ministry to allocate budget for that. Foreign Ministry might oppose and try to manipulate, but I believe the Defense Agency, the Coastal Guard Agency, and the National Land Ministry would cooperate. To begin with, we are going to launch fishing industry...we intend to build facilities for residents on the island. We also need a lighthouse." |
